Leave it to Kendrick Lamar to have me feeling inspired on this lovely Friday. My last post was four years ago. Four years of paying for a domain I was not using. I seen a Ov-Ho say that he’s already annoyed because he knows that Dot fans are going to break this video down…..and you are absolutely right.

“Kendrick fans just want you to know that they read a lot of books and were good in ELA.”

DING, DING, DING! You are correct again. As someone with a bookstagram (reading.withree if you want to check it out) who excelled in AP English….call me a super fan. I won’t talk about the whole video, but just my favorite parts.

First things first, Kendrick thinks he slick dropping that heat in the first 20 seconds of the video. WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?! Cause he’s good for bread crumbing bars and then never visiting it again. I need more of that.

First frame of the music video is the Compton courthouse….pretty self explanatory considering Baka has his weird cases.

Kendrick standing in the hallway with flickering lights definitely gives horror film boogey man vibes. It also could be tied to the movie The Sixth Sense, because immediately after, we hear the infamous “I see dead people” line. Am I geeked out right now? Absolutely.

Now let’s talk about Dot when he is in the cell doing push ups. This is obviously in reference to Drake’s “Push Ups.” Kendrick did s e v e n t e e n, stopped right before 18 and the scream I SCRUMPT. ALSOOOOO…Drake says, “I know my picture on the wall, when yall cook up.” In the frame the picture is on the ground and turned over.

As a-minorrrrrrrr is sang, he begins to hopscotch. As a little girl, hopscotch is something we would always do. So this itself is diabolical.

THE SHIPPING CONTAINERS. Being a true crime girly, shipping containers are always connected to human trafficking. Transporting women and young children illegally under the radar.

The second half of the Family Matters video was recreated in the Not Like Us video. We see what looks to be an impersonation of “Dark Lane Demo Tapes” Drake creeping up behind Kendrick, but then he is blown away. I immediately thought “okay, Boogeyman vibes,” but after watching it again I thought about how Seven is snatched up in Stranger Things. Maybe that’s me geeking a little too hard, but either way…..diabolical….again.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, we see The Duckworth Family. Whitney smiling and dancing in the living room with her man and children was the nail in the coffin. Whitney ate and left no crumbs. Did I mention she was wearing a wife beater as well? *spits out coffee*

I know there are many people who feel that Kendrick Lamar is milking it, but to be completely honest….Drake asked for this. I recall when Drake was turning Meek Mill every which way but loose and it was funny. I guess it’s just Drake’s turn. If you think we aren’t going to continue to hear this song over and over you are crazy. Ken & Friends Pop Out was on Juneteenth, a historical date. The music video is then dropped on July 4th (Colonizer holiday). Kendrick has basically let this man know that you’re not like us and you’re also not American. I still would like to know why Drake thought “rapping like you’re trying to free the slaves” was a bar, but again…..he’s not a colleague right? The art, the music, the visuals…. there is a reason this Kendrick has a Pulitzer.

With football season starting, HBCU football to be exact, I hope yall are ready to hear this being played all across the land. A two time Southern University Graduate myself, I know the Human Jukebox is going to c u t UP.

To the new Kendrick fans, welcome! To the old faithful’s, what it do baybeeeeee?! & to the current or fallen Aubrey Angel’s…..enjoy and embrace this iconic time in Hip-Hop.
