First, let me apologize for my long absence. Graduate school has just managed to literally take me by storm. It was almost like the transition from high school to college all over again, but I think I figured it out.

For the last few days I’ve been heavily following the protests at The University of Missouri (this is where some of you will probably stop reading and that’s okay) and it is devastating to know that it’s almost 2016 and bs like this is still occurring.

“Student protests over racial incidents at the University of Missouri escalated over the weekend when at least 30 black football players announced they will not participate in team activities until the university system’s president is removed.”

-Huffington Post

On Monday, University of Missouri president Tim Wolfe resigns during this criticism of how racial issues are being handled on campus. Okay…progress…change right? Maybe…maybe not, but it’s nice to see a group of young individuals come together and put their foot down. It’s nice to see young people stand up for something, because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that our generation is so lost, lacking knowledge & self respect. Stay with me though….I’m getting to the point.

Numerous of times I see the outcries of African American students at PWI’s. I feel your pain & I always pray that justice is served, but my issue is that you don’t have to deal with that. Now by no means am I here to start a PWI vs. HBCU debate. Regardless of what type of institution you attend it prides me to know that you are enrolled and defying stereotypes. Am I an advocate for my dear Southern University? Yes. Do I love what an HBCU stands for? Yes. Will I shun you for not attending one? No. But understand this….

“Black students go to a PWI, they’re discriminated against and deal with racism. They boycott and protest to be accepted into white space. Meanwhile, there is an HBCU down the road in jeopardy of staying open due to low enrollment.”

Now not all HBCU’s are struggling, but enrollment is not as high as it could be. There are even individuals who will talk down on these institutions all while being treated like yesterday’s trash at a PWI. That institution was not built for YOU. If it’s that bad then leave. Go where you are celebrated, not tolerated. Isn’t that what they were built for anyway?

Be blessed & GEAUX JAGS!
